John, a Scot, spent his early childhood in Northern Rhodesia,
Africa during his father's tenure in the British Colonial Service.
After schooling in Scotland and England, and work with Lloyds
of London Brokers in London and New York, he discovered Nantucket,
and Sandy, in the early 1980s.
John is also an actor and enjoys at least one run
on Nantucket each year. And, as with most Scots, he has a well-developed
passion for the game of golf.
Sandy, seeking change from a life in "official Washington
D.C., and with a background in historic preservation & design,
came back to Nantucket (the scene of youthful visits) in 1977.
She knew immediately that this special island
was "it" for her.

Having bought and restored the historic Corner House Inn in
1979…and then operated it together for 25 years… their life is
now in a state of “evolution”.
In the autumn of 2004, in order to spend more time with
family (and each other!) the decision was made to sell the two
main inn buildings of the Corner House Inn…and to continue with
a small, luxury bed and breakfast in the 3rd building. Arbor
Cottage now has its own identity and is operated with the
support of our spectacular neighbor across Step Lane…The
Veranda House.
